What is the Palais de la Découverte?

The Palais de la Découverte is a french museum in Paris on the Champs Elysée.

It is a place of discovery for people to learn about science through demonstrations and other activities. The museum employs PhD candidates to do those presentation which are entertaining and educational. I worked at the museum during my PhD as a scientific communicator. My role was to do presentations on liquid air and the chemistry of light.

An incredible experience

Liquid air

Air is a gas as you know, but it is still a chemical mix which has the same properties as all matter. Indeed at cold temperatures it becomes liquid and then solid, just like water, however it becomes liquid at -194°C. In this demonstration I presented the properties of this cryogenic liquid to the public of the museum.

This experience gave me the ability to speak to a large public. As well as being entertaining, the challenge was to also be educational. The ability to popularise the speech was crucial in order to explain complex physical and chemical processes to a none scientific audience.

Scientific popularisation
Cryogenic manipulation

The Chemistry of light

Another presentation I gave was on the chemistry of light. Indeed, many material are able to emit light, and the most fascinating property is luminescence, which is usually the fact that given some kind of energy (heat, light, mechanic, ...) many materials may transform the energy in the form of photons i.e. light.

The same kind of skills were gained here, but it also shows the versatility of my abilities as these two subject are quite afar scientifically. Yet, the skills of a PhD is to understand many different subject to quite some extent.
